Stick-slip-free movement: linear guide in winding machine for carbon fibre spools

No stick-slip

Carbon fiber spools for use in the aerospace technology, for example, are wound on this machine. The spools must be of a high quality. Due to the very slow manufacturing process for carbon fibers, the speed of this movement is extremely low. A low breakaway torque (stick slip) and minimal play were important criteria for the design of the linear guide system. A drylin® T linear guide system from igus® was chosen, which enables a sufficiently even linear movement for this application to be implemented at the low speeds.

Profile

  • What was needed: drylin T linear guide system
  • Requirements: Due to the very slow manufacturing process of carbon fibres, the speed of this movement is extremely low. A low breakaway torque (stick-slip) and minimal clearance were crucial for the linear guide.
  • Industry: Aerospace, aviation
  • Success for the customer: Preliminary tests at the customer's site proved that the drylin T achieves a sufficiently uniform linear movement even at extremely low speeds. The guide carriages consist of lubrication-free and extremely durable sliding elements.

Problem

Carbon fibres are becoming increasingly important in technical applications, e.g. in aviation and aerospace technology. For further processing into fabrics or braided sleeves, it is necessary to wind up the fibres after the manufacturing process. The quality of these spools is crucial for further processing. The company Georg Sahm GmbH & Co KG from Eschwege has therefore decided to develop a winding machine with automatic change function, with which carbon fibre spools of a high quality can be produced.
A uniformly controllable contact pressure of the filament guiding device on the winding material is an important parameter for achieving a high spool quality. The filament guide moves linearly upwards with increasing spool diameter. Due to the very slow manufacturing process of carbon fibres, the speed of this movement is extremely low. A low breakaway torque (stick-slip) and minimal clearance were important criteria for the design of the linear guide.

Solution

Preliminary tests at Sahm proved that the drylin T linear guide system can achieve a sufficiently uniform linear movement for this application, even at extremely low speeds. It thus prevents the stick-slip effect so that the filament guide can move continuously upwards in a linear fashion. Due to the adjustment possibility of the guide carriages, an almost clearance-free fine adjustment of the guide is possible. A defined displacement resistance of the guide has been set for this adjustment.
The core of the guide carriages consists of lubrication-free and extremely durable sliding elements made of our high-performance polymers. They are quick and easy to handle and maintenance-free in use. The rail guides made of hard anodised aluminium are tough and corrosion-resistant.
